Sarten is a Masters graduate from Elam School of Fine Art who works in a range of media from photography to installation.
Sarten began her art practice with an investigation into Anxiety using photography as a medium, and has more recently included sculptural approaches to broaden the scope of her practice.
Sarten’s work investigates various contemporary power relations including psychological, social and geo-political. Recent projects have engaged with topics ranging from war to child abuse, and ways of addressing situations that are endemic to our social situation while at the same time that sit outside society’s comfort zone. Sarten’s work asks us to think about things that are often pushed aside and not talked about.
While studying for her Masters degree at Elam, she narrowed down her research into Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, exploring some of the lesser-discussed aspects of the war experience had by New Zealand soldiers. Her work touched on subjects such as conscientious objectors, and the effects that post traumatic stress disorders had on soldiers. Her work continues to draw attention to specific historical and present events and aims to raise our awareness, of war and its results.
Sarten has won numerous awards including the joint winner of the Waikato Contemporary Art Award. Winner of 2011 Fieldays No.8 Wire National Art award Sarten exhibits extensively though out New Zealand Sarten has been exhibiting extensively though out NZ and overseas since 2002
